Even though I finished a degree in Philosophy in my Bachelor's, I'll still pursue it in the Graduate school and beyond because of love. I know, it's a corny reason, but love makes you corny, and loving wisdom makes me corny, so sue me.

Anywho, as the days pass and I grow older in this discipline, I realize the extent of my own stupidity. And realizing how big are these gaps, my appetite for knowledge is whetted all the more.

You see, the battle against ignorance and suffering is a life-long battle, and our only consolation, aside of course having the good life, is an ice-cold beer by the end of every week. Cheers.

Since Wikipedia wouldn't simply do.

Nuns Dare Call it Treason

newsweek:

Lisa Miller is really great in this story about the Catholic church’s war on American nuns:

Earlier this month, in something of a surprise, a nun at a Catholic hospital in Phoenix was excommunicated for approving a first-trimester abortion last year at that hospital to save the life of a critically ill patient. “An unborn child is not a disease,” said Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Phoenix diocese. “While medical professionals should certainly try to save a pregnant mother’s life, the means by which they do it can never be by directly killing her unborn child.” The irony here is thick: it has taken years, sometimes decades, to bring sex-abusing priests to justice, but this observant sister, Margaret McBride, was excommunicated in a matter of months for making a compassionate and impossible decision for one of her parishioners.

I was reading a Rina earlier this morning in The Inquirer and now this, so is it just me or as the years progress there seems to be a steady progress of willful ignorance in regards to Catholicism. If not ignorance, an outright misinformation?  Well, whatever the case maybe, let us clarify some things here.

First, abortion incurs a latae sententiae excommunication, meaning automatically, and it means it covers everyone within the flock: religious, laity, male or female. So I’m curious why does this article seem to paint that a) abortion is okay, b) there is a crackdown on nuns, c) Vatican is a centralized government, when the contrary of all of these are true.

Second, a justified abortion is justified when determined by a physician under the principle of double effect. The article is silent on this.

Third, seriously, the pedophilia issue has to be placed into perspective. It should be corrected, yes, but it should not be painted like it is a malignant and gnawing problem because it isn’t. I wonder why, when pedophilia is found in some portions of society, they are treated in a vacuum, for example Michael Jackson. You don’t see people joking about Pop artists touching children. But when a Catholic priest do it, they blame the power structure, interpret their vows in Freudian terms and then every priest is a pedophile. Curious, right?
